Rational Middle: Net Zero - Official Trailer

0:00

(soft ominous music)

0:02

- [Mark Finley] Where are we in our fight against climate change?

0:05

We're losing.

0:06

- [Dr. Richard Newell] We have levels of carbon dioxide that are

0:09

as high as they've been in two million years.

0:12

- [Dr. Virginia Burkett] We have changes in the distribution

0:14

of plants and animals,

0:16

increases in wildfire,

0:18

tide gauge records from around the world

0:20

showing acceleration of sea level rise.

0:24

- [Eric Drummond] We are just now at a point

0:25

where climate change is clearly impacting

0:28

virtually every segment of our population.

0:31

When you start to have that happen

0:33

then it becomes clear that it's a call to action.

0:36

- [Mark Finley] We are rapidly running out of space

0:39

to stop adding new greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere

0:43

if we want to limit the adverse consequences

0:46

before the social costs really take off.

0:51

- [Dr. Ramanan Krishnamoorti] We've been very, very slow to realize

0:54

the importance of global climate change.

0:56

What is going well is that there's an awareness

1:00

that is starting to build.

1:04

- [Dr. Michael Webber] The workforce is demanding a low carbon future.

1:07

Major industrial customers are requiring low carbon.

1:10

The investors are starting to demand it.

1:12

The markets have spoken and the markets have said

1:14

we're gonna make this change.

1:16

- [Eric Drummond] We will have to bring into the marketplace

1:19

technologies that aren't in existence now.

1:22

- [Todd Snitchler] Can it be done?

1:23

If we allow innovation to do what it does, yes.

1:27

- [Joy Ditto] A lot of different components are going to have

1:29

to come together, industries, support from government.

1:32

There has to be leadership.

1:34

- [Dr. Ramanan Krishnamoorti] We will have to start doing things at scale

1:36

and try out every one of these approaches.

1:39

We can't afford to get it wrong.

1:42

- [Dr. Isabella Gee] We can become a leader in net zero technologies

1:45

and in decarbonizing technologies.

1:47

And I think that we can grow our economy that way.

1:50

- [Dr. Virginia Burkett] We got ourselves in to this,

1:52

human ingenuity and working together,

1:54

I mean, that's the way out.

Powering Progress through Objective Storytelling

In 2012, Rational Middle and Shell partnered to create the Rational Middle of Energy. This award-winning docuseries dove deep into the need for natural gas in the energy system and the challenges of an energy transition. Since then, we've seen a shift in how society at large thinks and talks about energy & climate change. Significantly, 196 parties at COP21 in Paris adopted the Paris Agreement - a legally binding international treaty with the goal to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

Rational Middle and Shell are partnering again for an all-new series called Rational Middle: Net Zero, which will explore the technologies, policies, and partnerships required to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The hope is that these films can catalyze a conversation that leads to awareness and action, helping the United States make progress toward its Net Zero goals.

The new series is sponsored by Shell, with full creative and editorial control retained by the Rational Middle team and under the guidance of director Gregory Kallenberg. The films are independently fact-checked.

Why is Shell sponsoring Rational Middle: Net Zero?

0:00

- Hi, my name's Gregory Kallenberg,

0:02

and I am the founder of the Rational Middle.

0:04

The Rational Middle is a group

0:05

of passionate independent filmmakers

0:07

who create short documentaries about contentious issues.

0:11

We started the Rational Middle in 2011

0:14

when we created the "Rational Middle of Energy"

0:16

with Shell as our partner.

0:19

The films have been seen and shared over six million times.

0:23

They've won awards, and what's most important is

0:25

they help people understand how complicated

0:28

energy and the energy future was.

0:31

And now, a decade later,

0:32

we're once again partnering with Shell

0:34

to create a new series,

0:36

called the "Rational Middle: Net Zero."

0:39

(soft music)

0:50

- We're doing the "Rational Middle: Net Zero" edition

0:53

to really dig into what it's gonna take

0:56

for the United States to be at net zero by 2050.

1:00

And that might sound like a long way off,

1:03

and it might sound like something that's difficult

1:05

to get your head around, but actually,

1:08

we're gonna walk through what's happening right now

1:11

and try to make it a little bit more tangible for people.

1:15

- Climate change is an incredibly important issue,

1:19

and it's not a left or right issue.

1:21

It's something that is affecting our livelihood,

1:23

our communities, our cultures, our economy.

1:26

I can't think of an issue that is more difficult

1:28

than the decarbonizing of our economy.

1:31

And the only way that we can tackle

1:33

this massive challenge

1:34

is if we chart a path forward together.

1:37

- And that's gonna take collaboration

1:40

by companies like Shell,

1:42

but it's also gonna take collaboration with the government.

1:45

It's gonna take collaboration with communities,

1:47

with individuals, with consumers,

1:49

and all of that needs to come together.

1:51

It's one of the reasons why

1:53

we are entering into this conversation,

1:55

because working together is the only way

1:58

we're gonna reach net zero by 2050.

2:01

- We know that people will have a skepticism

2:03

about Shell sponsoring the series.

2:04

This happened last time.

2:06

In fact, we knew that

2:07

when we were getting kicked by both sides

2:09

that we were doing exactly the job we needed to do

2:11

by serving the rational middle.

2:13

That's why we're not only being transparent

2:16

about our support, but we're also ensuring

2:18

that we have a strong foundation of facts

2:20

that back up every one of our experts.

2:22

- So everything you hear will be fact-checked,

2:25

but you will hear differing views.

2:27

We will be challenging ourselves.

2:28

We will be challenging each other.

2:30

Bring your skepticism. Bring your curiosity.

2:33

Bring your questions.

2:35

That's the way we're going to actually create action,

2:38

is when people get involved and people have disagreements,

2:41

people come together, but we create the dialogue,

2:43

we create the curiosity, and we create the action.

2:48

Net zero by 2050 feels like a goal

2:51

that's way far out in the future.

2:53

And through this conversation,

2:55

we hope to bring it right here to now.

3:00

This film series, I think,

3:02

is going to help catalyze that conversation

3:05

and drive others into action

3:08

and help Shell be an action on that too.

3:11

- "Rational Middle: Net Zero" could be...

3:14

It actually is the greatest project

3:17

we've ever been able to work on.

3:19

And it's not just because we get to bring the voices

3:23

of the world's leading energy experts

3:25

to talk about their technologies

3:27

and how they're going to decarbonize our economy.

3:30

But also, through this series, we're gonna get to show

3:32

the communities that are being affected by climate change

3:35

and the work they're doing in those communities

3:37

to mitigate the effects of climate change.

3:41

- Climate change is the biggest challenge of our lives,

3:45

but I worry about how the world will look

3:47

when my kids grow up.

3:49

What kinds of actions can I be taking

3:52

that will help the world be a better place by 2050,

3:55

that will help us achieve that?

3:57

In fact, it's the reason I joined this company

3:59

four years ago, is 'cause I wanted to be part

4:02

of creating the future of energy.

4:04

- So no matter where you find yourself today,

4:07

whether you're someone who understands climate change

4:09

and is looking for those solutions

4:11

or you're just somebody just starting

4:13

to understand the issue,

4:15

what's important is that you see these films

4:18

and you become an active part of this discussion.

4:21

- Whether you're involved just by asking more questions

4:23

or reading more information

4:25

or having a conversation at your dinner table,

4:27

having those kinds of conversation drives action.

4:30

- We can't do this without you.

4:32

In fact, we can't do it without all of us.

4:35

So see the films, be an active part of the discussion,

4:39

and start getting on the road with all of us

4:42

to create the net zero future.
